Grand Prairie Probate Filing

Grand Prairie does not have its own probate court. Texas law requires probate to go through the county. Under Texas Estates Code Chapter 51, you file probate in the county where the person who died last lived. For Grand Prairie, the address determines whether that is Dallas or Tarrant County.

Dallas County has three probate courts. The George L. Allen, Sr. Courts Building in downtown Dallas handles probate for residents on the Dallas County side. The Central Records Division at (214) 653-7099 handles closed records. You can email them at DCClosedProbateRec@dallascounty.org.

Probate Record Types in Grand Prairie

Grand Prairie probate court records cover the standard Texas probate case types. Will probates are the most common. Under Texas Estates Code Chapter 256, the executor files the will with the County Clerk. Simple estates can use the muniment of title path.

Independent administration under Chapter 257 is the standard route in Texas. The court grants the executor power to manage everything with limited supervision. Other types include guardianship cases, heirship determinations under Chapter 304, and small estate affidavits for estates under $75,000 per Section 205. Wills can be deposited for safekeeping at $5. The deadline to probate is four years from date of death.

Grand Prairie residents dealing with a split-county situation should confirm which side the person's home was on before filing. The wrong county will reject the application. This is especially important for Grand Prairie because the Dallas-Tarrant line runs through the city. A few blocks can make the difference between filing in Dallas or Fort Worth.
